Trader Boys Celebrates 73 Years in Business!

Trader Boys Office Furniture is a family-owned and operated office furniture showroom in West Los Angeles. My father started the company in 1949 after returning home to Los Angeles from World War ll where he served as an officer in the Merchant Marines. Dad thought a used furniture, appliance and bric-a-brac store would do well in this new neighborhood on the westside of Los Angeles, so he placed an ad in the local newspaper that said, “I will buy, sell or trade anything!” In no time, his one-car garage was filled to capacity. When a tiny 1400 square foot storefront came up for rent on the corner of Pico and Barrington, he grabbed it.

Even though that little corner store required his presence seven days a week, he enthusiastically worked the hours he set for himself: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM;
Saturday’s, 9:00 to 6:00; and Sundays 10:00 to 3:00 PM.

The hard work and perseverance paid off when seven years later, a vacant lot came up for sale just one block down the street, and he could afford to pay it’s $6,000 asking price. That was in 1956, and coincidentally, the year I was born.

Dad and his best friend constructed the building that we still occupy today. It’s so worth the visit to see the magnificence of their work. Rebar and cinderblock walls support the 20-foot wood-rafter ceiling, with huge iron beams holding up the ceiling and roof.

When I joined the company in 1975, used file cabinets were the hot commodity. We’d sell them faster than we could find them. When a sales representative dropped by to show us products from a new steel furniture manufacturer named Steel Master – whose prices for cabinets and desks beat what we paid for the used products – there was no turning back. We went from selling used “anything” to selling new file cabinets and desks, with some secretarial chairs thrown in for good measure.

When Dad retired in 1982, I knew I couldn’t say good-bye. Trader Boys was special. To this day, I’m grateful I didn’t. I’ve made changes along the way, going where you our customers and the industry have taken me. Now that I’m near Dad’s age when he retired, my love for Trader Boys won’t let me leave; and, to my delight, two of my children, Kacey and Cameron, love it too. Their commitment to  continuing their Grandfather’s legacy is true. Even my husband, who retired from his career last April, jumped in to volunteer his time. It’s a family affair.

Trader Boys Inc is a showroom showcasing new commercial-grade, state of the art office furniture, with a staff that values a commitment to excellence as much now as we did opening day, 1949.
